How to Soften Clay Soil in a Few Hours for Post Holes
- 1). Drill holes into the ground where the post holes will be placed. Clear all brush, grass or vines that may entangle the drill bit. Drill holes 2 inches apart covering the entire area.
- 2). Pour water into the drilled holes. Use a small amount of water, letting it soak through. Too much water will cause the clay soil to turn to mud and make it difficult to work, states the University of California Cooperative Extension.
- 3). Use a shovel or post hole digger to remove the softened soil. Repeat the process with the next layer of soil below the soil that was just removed.
