How to Have a Hot Run From an Existing Wall Switch
- 1). Turn off the power to the circuit you'll be working on at the circuit breaker panel.
- 2). Unscrew the switch plate cover for the switch at the top and bottom. Remove the switch plate.
- 3). Unscrew the switch from the gang box at the top and bottom. Pull the switch out of the gang box as far as possible.
- 4). Loosen the two screws on the switch with black wires attached. Place the bare ends of the wires together and slide a wire nut over the end of them. Twist the wire nut until it's holding the wires securely. Push the wires back into the gang box.
- 5). Place a blank box cover onto the gang box.
