How to Cut a Piece of Cinder Block

    • 1). Place two cinder blocks on their sides with the holes facing upwards. Spread the cinder blocks so that there is a distance of about half the length of one block between them. Position each block securely so that no movement occurs when you apply force. This is the surface upon which you will cut the cinder block.

    • 2). Place the cinder block you want to cut onto the two cinder blocks already on the ground. Position it with the flat side of the cinder block pointing upwards and ensure it lies flat.

    • 3). Use the tape measure to measure half way along the flat side of the block you want to cut and make a mark with the chalk. Use the tape measure to draw a straight chalk line from this mark across the width of the block. Put on your gloves and goggles and place the blade of your chisel on the chalk mark and tap it lightly with the hammer. Continue tapping the chisel along the chalk line, creating a groove that acts as a marker for your chisel. Flip over the cinder block so that the other flat surface is facing upwards. Measure halfway along its length again and draw another chalk line bisecting the block. Use the hammer and chisel to tap another groove into this side of the block.

    • 4). Place the blade of the chisel in the groove and hit the handle end with the hammer. Strike the handle end with more force than you used to create the groove. Continue to place the chisel in the groove and strike with the hammer along the marked groove, breaking apart the structure of the block. Turn over the block and repeat until the block breaks apart.

    • 5). Place the blade of the chisel at the base of any rough protrusions on the broken cinder block and strike it hard with the hammer one time to cleanly break off the protrusion. Rub the rough edge of the heavy duty sanding block on the broken edge of the block to smooth any rough edges. Rub in a vigorous motion, grinding away all small protrusions.
