Identification

• Most condensation leaks are found on ceiling panels in the corner of a room. Rather than finding just one large stain, you may discover that there are several concentric circles of stains. The innermost ring of the stain is the darkest and the oldest, with the outermost ring being the newest and usually the lightest in color. Multiple rings in a condensation leak stain indicate that the leak has been there for some time.
  
  

Repair

• Rather than repairing or replacing any stained ceiling panels, get straight to the source of the condensation leak. Check the hollow area above the stained ceiling panels for any water droplets or damp spots. But for many roof leaks, the hole that has led to the accumulation of condensation may be much farther up. The hole may be easy to see or barely visible, so you'll need to grab a flashlight and inspect every accessible area of the roof and the supportive beams that it rests upon.
  
  Locate the roof condensation leak by checking every element of your roof. Look for damaged areas or loose shingles first, and repair any damage that you come across. Continue inspecting the entire roof, being sure to check all seams and seals, as well as corners, joints and the attached gutter system.
  
  

Prevention

• Prevent future condensation leaks by dehumidifying your home. If excess moisture builds up in your home, either from a leak or from poor air circulation and ventilation, you'll have future condensation leaks and damage to deal with. Install vents in your roof or use an air-circulation system in the roof cavity of your home. Keep the inside of your home well ventilated by circulating air with fans. Install exhaust fans in your kitchen and bathrooms, and use them every time you cook or use the bathtub. Check to make sure that your clothes dryer is being vented outside of the home and not next to it or underneath it. Finally, use portable dehumidifiers in rooms and areas where excess moisture seems to be prevalent.
