How to Jack up a Corvette C5
- 1). Perform the jacking up procedure on a flat, level surface. Set the emergency brake. Start the process at the front of the car, then move to the back.
- 2). Place a block of wood that is approximately 12-inches long, 1.5-inches tall and wide enough to support the tire in front of the tires. Drive the Corvette up onto the pieces of wood. If the jack you are using has a taller mechanism, you may have to use a thicker board to raise the car up enough to slide the jack underneath it.
- 3). Slide the jack in from the front of the Corvette, under the nose of the car. Place the jack pad under one of the two reinforcing ribs located on the chassis cross-rails, which are part of the front suspension crossmember. Make sure that you do not accidentally jack up under the oil pan: Use a light to locate the chassis cross-rails.
- 4). Place the jack stands under either side of the car once it is lifted and supported by the floor jack. Never work under the car when it is supported only by a floor jack. Look at the bottom of the frame rail that goes around the perimeter of the car: In the area where the frame rails turn in to clear each wheel, you will see circular metal reinforcement pads that are welded-in or riveted-on; the slots contain slots. Place the jack stand under the reinforcement pads and lower the Corvette, so that the jack stands support the vehicle directly on the reinforcement pads.
- 5). Lift the rear of the Corvette by sliding the floor jack in from the back of the car, so that the jack is positioned underneath the two reinforcing ribs located on the frame cross-rail, at the rearmost part of the car. Lift the vehicle at these two ribs--do not use the single rib located inside the two outer ribs.
- 6). Lower the car onto the jack stands placed under the reinforcing pads located on the frame perimeter, near the spots where the frame bends to clear the wheels.
