    Buy a Proper Refill Kit

    • Refilling some laser toner cartridges requires more tools than others. Buying the appropriate kit for your cartridge will provide you with everything you need to successfully refill your laser toner cartridge. Some laser toners refill on the sides and already have holes in them for refilling. In order to refill the cartridge, you need only to remove the plug. Other toners must have a new hole created in them for refilling. If you purchase the proper kit for your toner cartridge, it will come with the necessary tools, including the proper toner.

    Cartridges With Refill Holes

    • If there is a hole with a plug in it on the side of the cartridge, dislodge the plug with a flathead screwdriver. Dump the remaining toner out into the trash or, if you have a vacuum with a hose extension, use that to suck out the toner that is left. Once you have the cartridge emptied, turn the bottle of toner upside down and tap it lightly to loosen up the toner. Turn the bottle back upright, remove the cap and seal, and attach the funnel cap to the top of the bottle as tightly as possible. Tilt the bottle forward, inserting the funnel cap into the hole on the cartridge. The toner will slowly pour into the cartridge. If the toner stops flowing before the cartridge is full, remove the toner bottle from the cartridge, replace the cap, turn it the bottle upside down and tap it again until the toner is again flowing, then start again. When the cartridge is full, close the hole with the plug. You will need to twist it lightly to insert it properly. Once the plug is in place, gently move the cartridge from side to side to properly distribute the toner.

    Cartridges Without Refill Holes

    • There are other laser cartridges that will not have a hole. You will need a hole-making tool to create one and a plug to fill the hole once the refill is complete. Place the hole-making tool on the stand that comes with it and plug it in. Let the tool heat up for at least three minutes before use. Once it is heated, place the copper bit of the tool against the cartridge. On most cartridges, there will be a spot indicated by a small circle in the casing. Push the bit against the plastic in this circle until a hole melts into the cartridge. One the hole is created, place the tool back on its stand and unplug it to allow it to cool. If any plastic has fallen inside the cartridge, it must be removed to prevent print problems. Once the hole is made, refill the cartridge as normal. When the cartridge is full, place the plug in the hole and gently twist it into place.
