Van Gogh "Starry Night" Craft Ideas
- "Starry Night" appeals to all ages, including children. Give kids tissue paper, glue, yarn and felt and have them create a colorful collage version of the painting. Start by ripping the tissue paper into small pieces and pasting them together on paper to create a swirling background, then add details on top. Or concentrate on the painting's brush technique and style and have them create paintings using similar brush strokes on paper. Try using different types of paint and different color palettes.
- Use "Starry Night" as the inspiration for a mosaic using pieces of broken ceramic and glass. Search flea markets for old or damaged plates, tiles and bottles in shades of blue and yellow. Wrap them one at a time in an old towel and break them into small shards with a hammer. Sketch your swirling star-and-moon design on a wood tabletop or piece of plywood and glue the shards in place with tile glue. When all of the pieces have been glued in place and dried, apply grout between the pieces to finish.
- Instead of keepsakes, fill a shadowbox with a 3-D variation of "Starry Night." Start with a painted background of the sky, then add painted cardboard cutout hills, trees, a village, and finally, a green cypress in the left foreground made of dark green polymer clay. Paint the sides of the box, inside and out, in the same swirling star pattern as the background. You can use a purchased shadow box with glass, a cigar box or a recycled small cardboard box.
- There are "Starry Night" embroidery kits on the market that will result in a near-replica of the painting, but if you want to add some of your own creativity to your "Starry Night"-inspired embroidery, draw your own pattern by hand. Use royal blue fabric for the background and stitch your own stars and swirls using yellow, gold, cream, light blue and white embroidery floss. Draw swirly chalk marks on the fabric for your pattern, and use short chain stitches for the lines and a detached chain for the stars.
