Ideas on Using Mosaic Tiles for Flooring
- Laying one solid, unbroken color of mosaic tile across the whole floor might sound boring, but it can create a dramatic look because of the inherent intricacy of the small tiles. Even a stark white floor of tiny mosaic tiles, with white grout to match, is going to have a subtle visual texture to it. To bring out that texture, use a slightly contrasting grout color--say, off-white grout for the white tile--or even a sharp contrast, like bright white grout for deep blue tiles.
- A classic approach to mosaic tiles is to buy two different colors and play them off each other, grouping them in simple designs. For example, lay alternating 2-foot square sheets of each color, creating a larger checkerboard pattern than would be possible with large individual ceramic tiles. As a different technique, make one color the base and run the other in a 1-foot border near the edge of the room, or use one color to create a faux throw rug in the center of the room.
- If you've got some artistic talent, get very small mosaic tiles--1/2 inch square--in multiple colors, and create intricate designs across your floor. For example, bright yellow tiles can be grouped to create a sun rising over a horizon, with a deep backdrop sky. You can use varying shades of blue, green and gray tiles to create an image of a forest stream running through the middle of the room. Even human portraits can be created there.
