It may be of little surprise to you that panic attacks in children are on the rise.
Life is lived at such an extraordinarily fast pace nowadays.
There is constant pressure on kids to do well and succeed and there may even be family tensions and problems to deal with.
It is common that youngsters can feel threatened, scared and extreme discomfort in everyday life.
Unfortunately this can lead to panic attacks in children.
1) Recognize the symptoms of panic attacks in children - This may start with a shortness of breath and an extremely fast heart beat.
This may be followed by numbness throughout the body, sweating and trembling.
Other symptoms include a fear of dying and in some cases agoraphobia or claustrophobia may ensue.
2) Medication - Panic attacks in children may often require prescribed medication.
Always consult your doctor and let them know of your concerns.
In some cases your doctor may prescribe Xanax or another calming tranquilizer.
However, never administer any medication to your child if you are unsure of the correct dosage or if you notice any peculiar side effects.
Many of the drugs involved in treating panic attacks in children can bring on drowsiness, so just be aware that your child may have decreasing concentration levels.
3) Confrontation - This is an activity to deal with your child's attacks that i don't altogether agree with.
This is about making your child face their fears.
If a certain situation has previously brought on attacks, then you should slowly encourage your child to tackle that situation once more.
I'm not a fan on this type of treatment.
For someone so young, this could have a lasting negative effect on a child for the rest of their life.
4) Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) - CBT concentrates on training your child to notice when the physical or psychological symptoms of a panic attack are about to strike.
The basic principles of CBT is that if you are aware of what is about to follow, you have a far better chance of dealing with it.
This is about training your mind and body to do certain things at the onset of an attack.
5) Learn to avoid panic attacks in children - Prevention is better than a cure.
There are certain situations or circumstances that can trigger extreme anxiety.
Perhaps your child is going through puberty and doesn't understand what is happening.
Maybe they have problems at school or amongst their peer group.
These attacks could even be caused by diet.
Sweets and caffeinated drinks can dramatically increase your child's stress levels.
