How to Remove an Oil Pump from a Ford Van 7.5 Motor
- 1). Allow the engine to cool to avoid the risk of serious burns from hot engine oil.
- 2). Place an oil drain pan underneath the engine's oil pan to capture the oil. Remove the single drain bolt located at the bottom of the oil pan with a wrench, then allow the oil to drain into the drain pan. Insert the drain bolt back into the oil pan to avoid misplacing it.
- 3). Remove the bolts that secure the oil pan to the bottom of the engine with a wrench. There are a total of 22 bolts surrounding the entire lip of the pan.
- 4). Gently tap on the side of the oil pan with a rubber mallet to dislodge the pan. The rubber mallet will provide enough force to dislodge the pan without denting it.
- 5). Remove the two bolts that secure the base of the oil pump to the bottom of the engine, then slowly pull the oil pump in a downward direction to remove it. As the pump is lowered, a metal rod will become visible at the top of the pump. This metal rod sits on top of the pump and fits into the bottom of the distributor. As the distributor turns, it turns this rod, which then operates the oil pump. This rod will not be attached to anything as the oil pump is being lowered. Grasp the rod as soon as possible and lower both the rod and the oil pump out of the engine to complete the process.
