Canvas Room Divider Ideas

    Canvas Shade

    • One of the easiest ways to divide a room with canvas is to use it as a shade. Staple canvas material to a shade roller cut to the size you need. Attach the roller hangers to the ceiling. Attach a grommet to the bottom edge of the canvas, and tie a string to it. Once the roller is in place on the ceiling, it is possible to pull the "shade" down when the divider is needed and roll it back in place when it is not.

You can also create a Roman-style shade by folding the material accordion style. Thread a heavy needle with string, and push through the center of the folds on the two longest sides. Staple the top of the canvas fabric to a piece of wood, and attach the wood to the ceiling. By pulling the threads, the material should raise and lower. Secure the thread to eye-hooks screwed into the wall in an out-of-the-way place.

    Canvas Curtain

Create a canvas curtain to use as a room divider that can be opened and closed on demand. Attach drapery rod holders to each side of the area to be separated. If the space is long, you may need to add additional support in the center to help hold the weight. Cut a 2-inch diameter dowel to the length needed. Cut two pieces of canvas to the length you need at a width that is half the distance needed for the room divider. Fold the top of each canvas piece so that you have an overlap of about two inches. Punch and secure grommets through the folded canvas at 3- to 4-inch intervals. Attach some shower curtain rings through the grommets. Slide the rings onto the dowel. Screw in your favorite drapery rod finial on each end of the dowel, and put the dowel in place on the rod holder. The curtain rings will allow you to open and close the curtain along the dowel from each side.

    Foldable Canvas Divider

Create a room divider that can be folded and put away when not needed. Make either three or five panels out of 1 x 1-inch pieces of wood. They should be rectangular in shape. The two long sides should be about six inches longer than needed. These extra six inches are the legs of the divider. Staple pieces of canvas which have been cut to the size of the opening in the rectangle to the top and bottom of each panel. Connect the panels so that they fold into an accordion shape by placing two to three hinges on one side of the first and last panel and the same number on each side of the inner panels.

    Artistic Applications

    • Canvas is a good medium to use for painting or printing. Before finishing your handmade screen, paint the canvas first or purchase a preprinted piece of canvas to use. Canvas can be preprinted with giclee prints of photographs or artwork, landscapes or fun geometric shapes. Use the screen to create a focal point for your room and enhance the style of your room decor.
