    • 1). Push the pin on the light mechanism if it is stuck down. The refrigerator light is switched off by a small pin that gets pushed down when the door is closed. If the pin becomes stuck, the light will remain off when the door is opened. Several pushes can sometimes loosen the pin.

    • 2). Unplug the refrigerator and clean the light mechanism with a slightly damp cloth. If the pin is sticky or dirty, it will get stuck easier than if it were clean. Wipe any residue off of the pin while the refrigerator door is open. Push it in a few times to confirm it does not stick. The light should go off whenever you push the pin.

    • 3). Unplug the refrigerator. Unclip the cover and unscrew the lightbulb to remove it from the fridge. Like any light, the bulb inside your refrigerator will eventually burn out. Replacement bulbs are available from your local home-improvement store and need to be the same size, shape and wattage of the previous bulb in order to work properly.

    • 4). Verify the light on the water dispenser is set to "ON." Press the "LIGHT" button until "ON" is shown on the refrigerator's display. Some Whirlpool refrigerators also have an "AUTO" or "NIGHT LIGHT" mode that activates the light during certain times.

    • 5). Contact a technician if the light continues to malfunction. You may be entitled to free service if your Whirlpool refrigerator is within its warranty period. See Resources for a link to Whirlpool's service page.
