Things You'll Need

Instructions

1

Locate the compressor for the air conditioning system. The compressor is outside the home and usually resting on a concrete slab. The data plate will be affixed to the back of the compressor. A flashlight may be necessary in order to clearly read the information on the data plate.
2

Write down all information contained on the data plate. The model number, serial number and brand name are the most important pieces of information. A manufacturer number may be present. The maximum fuse or circuit breaker rating may also be information needed by a parts store or repair company.
3

Give this information to the parts store or repair company when contacting them. Manufacturer's websites will be able to help decipher what the numbers mean. The manufacturing date and location, tonnage, voltage, seer rating and refrigerant types are all coded into the model and serial numbers.
