How to Change the Oil in a 1987 Jeep Wrangler
- 1). Park the Jeep on a flat surface. Set the parking brake to prevent the Jeep from rolling while changing the oil.
- 2). Place a drain pan under the oil pan, located directly under the engine.
- 3). Unscrew the drain plug at the bottom of the oil pan with a socket wrench. Allow all the oil to drain out. This may take up to five minutes. Screw the drain plug back into the oil pan and tighten it with the socket wrench.
- 4). Remove the oil filter with a filter wrench. The oil filter is located in front of the oil pan. Place the used oil filter with the waste oil in the pan.
- 5). Fill a new filter with fresh engine oil. Spread some oil around the gasket with your index finger. This will help make removing the filter during the next oil change interval easier. Screw the oil filter onto the oil filter housing manually. Do not use a wrench as this will strip the threads from the oil filter housing or the oil filter itself.
- 6). Open the hood to access the oil cap on the top of the engine on the valve cover.
- 7). Unscrew the oil cap and pour in four quarts of engine oil. Allow two minutes for the oil to settle then pull the engine oil dipstick located next to the valve cover.
- 8). Wipe the dipstick clean with a rag. Reinsert it into the dipstick tube then pull it out and inspect the level on the dipstick. If the oil does not register to the "Full" mark, pour in half a quart of oil and check it again. Repeat this process until the level reads to the "Full" mark.
- 9). Reinsert the dipstick into the dipstick tube and screw the oil cap back onto the valve cover. Start the Jeep and allow it to idle for three to five minutes. Turn the Jeep off and wait three minutes for the oil to settle then check the level again. Fill if necessary.
