DIY Boiler Removal
- 1). Turn off the gas or electricity to the boiler. If the boiler is electric, shut the breaker to the heater off. If the boiler is gas powered, make sure the gas valve is completely closed. Turn off the water supply to the boiler.
- 2). Attach a garden hose to the boiler drain. Run the hose to an outside area where the runoff will be out of the way. Open the furthest hot water tap from the boiler. This will help drain all the water in the lines. Open the drain valve and drain the water from the boiler.
- 3). Remove the vent pipe from the draft hood on the boiler. This vent pipe is only found on gas boilers. Remove the draft hood as well. These pieces are usually only attached by a sheet metal screw, and only need a screwdriver to remove them. Disconnect the gas pipe from the heater. Often, there is a cap that is hanging from the pipe that connects to the heater. Use this cap to block off the gas line.
- 4). Disconnect the water lines from the boiler by loosening and removing the nuts or pipe unions with a pipe wrench. Pipe unions are essentially couplings that connect two pieces of pipe; they are threaded for easy installation and removal.
- 5). Remove the boiler from the house and dispose of it according to local regulations.
