    Red Fall Annuals

    • In cool climates, plant the annual zinnia cultivar Zahara Double Fire for an orange-red flower until the first frost. Growing to 12 inches tall, this zinnia works well in cottage and cutting gardens as well as containers. Purslane and cosmos come in red cultivars, blooming from early summer into the autumn. The moss rose, a South American annual, grows to just 9 inches high. Red is one of the colors available; the flowers stay closed on rainy or cloudy days, but the species blooms into the fall months.

    Red Fall Perennials

    • Red, as well as pink and magenta, are the colors of the flowers of million bells, a perennial suitable for use in U.S. Department of Agriculture plant hardiness zones 9 through 11. Million bells, also known as trailing petunias, generate hundreds of flowers into the fall. Raquel is a chrysanthemum option for zones 5 through 9, with maroon-red flowers that bloom from September to frost. Plant it in groups or along perennial borders. The flowers of the stonecrop cultivar Autumn Joy start out light pink, but they change to a rose red shade before going to a rust color prior to dying. This species does best in full sun in zones 3 through 9.

    Deciduous Shrubs

    • Lucy is a Rose of Sharon cultivar, blooming into October with large, red flowers. Growing to 8 feet high, this multi-stemmed deciduous shrub has many functions. Use it along a foundation, to create hedges, as a specimen plant or as a screen. Shiny green leaves and rich, red roses are the trademark of Red Flower Carpet, a shrub rose grown as ground cover in zones 5 through 9. Deciduous shrub roses, including Mister Lincoln, Fourth of July, Julie Ann and Knock Out, are other selections for a red fall bloom.

    Others

    • The woodbine cultivar Serotina is a vine appropriate for trellises and fences, generating flowers with yellow and white insides, but deep red exteriors. Rubrum is a cultivar of ornamental fountain grass, known for its burgundy-red flowerheads that last until October. It is winter hardy in USDA zones 9 and 10. The camellia shrub Crimson Robe lasts late into fall, sometimes blooming into December in zones 8 through 10. Its red flowers, as wide as 7 inches, go well with its evergreen foliage
