Many people find it strange that a substance with the word fatty in it is actually good for them.
In terms of nutrition there are good fats and bad fats.
The bad fats that increase the bad cholesterol in the body can be saturated fats which are found in meat and dairy produce.
Essential fatty acids are considered good because they can provide you with many health benefits.
A essential fatty acid is fish oil and the benefits of fish oil have been well known for a long time.
In the past EFA's were considered a vitamins however, they are now listed under polyunsaturated fats.
The main benefits associated with the intake of EFA's are lowering your risk of heart disease.
Through medical research evidence has shown that it can reduce the instances of blood clots.
Bloods clots in the body can increase the risk of a heart attack or stroke.
There has also been other research that has revealed that in countries where the staple diet is fish there are lower incidences of heart disease and stroke.
There are 2 types of fatty acids that are known as omega 3 and omega 6.
The most important omega 3 is considered to be alpha linolenic acid.
The best source of getting omega 3 is by eating plenty of fish.
Certain fish are better than others in terms of getting enough omega 3.
For example, the best fish to eat is oily fish.
These can be found in fish such as mackerel, sardines, herrings and salmon.
Omega 3 can also be taken by taking fish oil tablets if you do not like fish or you are unable to get it.
However, the best way of getting enough omega 3 is by eating fish.
You should try and eat fish about 3 times a week if you can.
The other important essential fatty acid is omega 6.
The most important ingredient of the omega 6 is what is called linoleic acid and linolinic acid.
Although this is essential for the body's health we may be getting to much of it due to the western diet.
