    • 1). Log in to the computer. Connect Motorola Q to a Universal Serial Bus (USB) port on the computer by using the USB cable included with the Motorola Q.

    • 2). Tap "Start ," "Active Sync," "Sync" on the Motorola Q. The Motorola Q will perform a sync operation by transferring whatever information changed since the previous sync. Wait until it finishes.

    • 3). Choose a file already on your computer's hard disk. It can be any file; the ideal size is between 1 and 2 megabytes.

    • 4). Drag the file to the Motorola Q's icon on the Windows desktop. ActiveSync will transfer the file from the computer to the phone. Wait until it finishes.

    • 5). Open a text editor such as Notepad. Use it to open file "%temp%\wcescomm.log." That file contains the log of the individual actions that comprised the most recent syncs, with their start times. Look at the timestamps for the beginning and end of the last sync (when the file was transferred to the phone.) Subtract the time at the beginning from the time at the end to calculate the Motorola Q's sync time.

    • 6). Disconnect the Motorola Q from the computer. Connect the Palm to a USB port on the computer by using the USB cable included with the Palm.

    • 7). Tap "Home," "HotSync" on the Palm's screen. Tap the center icon with the two circular arrows. The Palm will perform a sync operation by transferring whatever information changed since the previous sync. Wait until it finishes.

    • 8). Click "Start," "All programs," then "Palm" on the computer. Double-click on "Palm Install." Drag to the Palm Install window the same file you chose in Step 3. Tap "Home," "HotSync" on the Palm's screen. Tap the center icon with the two circular arrows. HotSync Manager will transfer the file from the computer to the Palm.

    • 9). Click on the HotSync Manager icon (red and blue circular arrows) on the computer's Windows taskbar. Select "View log." The log entries closest to the beginning of the log will correspond to the last sync (when the file was transferred to the phone.) Subtract the time at the beginning from the time at the end to calculate the Palm's sync time.

Compare the sync times for the Motorola Q (from Step 5) and the Palm (from Step 9.) The times are comparable because they correspond to transferring exactly the same volume of data.
