How to Replace an Oil Pan Gasket in a 1992 Toyota Camry
- 1). Park the Camry on a level surface. Apply the parking brake. Brace the real wheels with wheel chocks for added safety. Raise the front end of the car using a floor jack. Place the jack stands underneath the frame. Lower the car onto the stands.
- 2). Put on your safety glasses. Open the hood and disconnect the battery. Remove the oil fill cap to relieve the oil pressure.
- 3). Slide underneath the car on your back. Place the oil recycling container directly under the oil drain plug (bolt). Carefully remove the drain plug and completely drain the oil into the oil recycle container. Be sure to not drop the drain plug into the container.
- 4). Disconnect the exhaust manifold pipe to allow for better access to the right-side oil pan mounting bolts. Take out the two lower crossmember suspension bars using a socket wrench.
- 5). Remove the oil pan mounting bolts that secure the pan to the engine block using a socket wrench and extension as needed. Gently tap the pan with a rubber mallet to break the seal, or use a gasket seal cutter as necessary.
- 6). Scrape away the old gasket where the pan attaches to the engine using a paint scraper or razor. Thoroughly remove all remaining gasket and debris remaining on the oil pan. Scrape with a razor and scrub using a wire brush as necessary.
- 1). Apply a 1/8 inch-wide bead of gasket sealant onto the rim of the oil pan. Place the new gasket on the oil pan. Make sure the mounting bolt holes are properly aligned. Apply another 1/8 inch-wide bead of sealant onto the remaining side of the gasket.
- 2). Press the new oil pan against the engine block and screw in several mounting bolts by hand. Do not let the gasket be disturbed or move out of alignment. Screw in the remaining bolts by hand. Tighten them all using the socket wrench in a crossing pattern. Replace the drain plug and tighten.
- 3). Reattach the lower crossmember suspension bars and reconnect the exhaust manifold pipe to the engine block.
- 4). Re-raise the car. Remove the jack stands and wheel chocks. Reconnect the battery. Slowly pour in four quarts of new oil and allow it settle. Check the oil level using the dipstick and add additional oil as necessary. Start the engine, inspect the oil pan for leaks and re-check the oil fluid level.
