    • 1). Raise the hood and locate the three tubular pipes of the exhaust manifold on the driver's side of the engine. Check that the bolts are secure and the gaskets aren't worn. Replace any missing bolts. Look for moisture buildup or cracks on the manifold.

    • 2). Lift the vehicle on a hoist or hydraulic lift. If you prefer, use a creeper to slide under the Explorer.

    • 3). Shine a flashlight up from under the SUV to inspect the gaskets and the bolts on the undersides of the manifold. Use the light to look at all the other parts of the exhaust, including the catalytic converter, muffler and two tailpipes that come out of the muffler. Make sure all the connections are tight.

    • 4). Tap gently with a hammer along each piece to locate any weak sections. Run your hand over the entire system to feel for holes, cracks, rust or loose connections.

    • 5). Feel the hangers and clamps to make sure they're securely in place and not rattling around.

    • 6). Lower the SUV or slide out from under it after you've examined the exhaust system on your Ford Explorer.
