Sticks

• You need one or two wooden dowels or skewers for hair sticks. You may need to sharpen the end of the skewers so that they slide into the hair without getting caught in it. Use a pencil sharpener or a craft knife to sharpen the edge of the skewer. You can also use bamboo knitting needles for your hair sticks. Sticks need to be 6 to 7 inches long. They should be sturdy and thin enough to slide through your hair.
  
  

Acrylic Paint and Stain

• Use acrylic paint to decorate your hair sticks. Acrylic paint comes in many colors. Use a paint palette and paint brush to apply paint to the wooden skewers or knitting needles.
  
  

Beads and Hemp String

• To embellish sticks with beads, you need a variety of beads such as glass beads or wooden beads in various sizes. Make sure that you have beads with holes big enough for a hemp string to pass through. Braid the hemp string and tie it on the edge of your skewers. Add glass beads to the string. Tie the string with the beads around the edge of the stick in your own creative fashion.
  
  

Glue and Gloves

• If you need glue to hold the embellishments in place, you can use super glue. However, you want to wear latex gloves to keep the glue off of your skin. If you are allergic to latex, use vinyl gloves.
