How to Keep a Fridge or Freezer at a Constant Temperature

    • 1). Keep the refrigerator and freezer away from sources of heat such as ovens, heaters and clothes dryers. The appliances draw air from the surroundings to chill and pump through the compartments. Hot air causes the compressor to work harder and may raise the temperature.

    • 2). Limit the number of times you open the door. Cool air escapes every time the seal between the door and the appliance is broken. Avoid propping the door open for more than a few seconds when you are removing more than one item. Always make sure the door has closed tightly. Some refrigerators have an alarm that sounds if the door is left ajar.

    • 3). Make sure the thermostat is properly set. Tap the "Up" or "Down" arrow buttons on digitally controlled appliances to adjust the internal temperatures. Dial-controlled appliances do not have markings that correspond to a particular temperature; set the dial to the middle position for best results. Consider purchasing a thermometer to help you achieve an accurate setting.

    • 4). Allow at least a few inches of space on all sides of the appliance for air to circulate. Appliances built into the surrounding cupboards require around 5 inches of ventilation room at the top. There should be roughly 2 inches clearance on the sides and back on freestanding models. Reducing air flow through poor positioning may cause temperature maintenance problems.

    • 5). Avoid storing hot food in the refrigerator. Allow the food to cool slightly before freezing or placing it in the refrigerator. The U.S. Department of Agriculture recommends refrigerating or freezing food within 2 hours of serving to slow bacteria development. Place hot soups in small, shallow containers to expedite the chilling or freezing process. Storing hot food will cause a temporary spike in temperatures.
