    Starting Problems

    • If your ATV simply refuses to start, a number of things could be to blame. The first and most obvious cause is a dead battery, so it is important to test the battery or hook up a battery charger before taking any other troubleshooting steps. Starting problems can also be caused by a lack of fuel, or by fuel that has deteriorated over time. If it has been some time since you gassed up your ATV, you may want to drain the tank and refill it with fresh fuel. Also be sure to check the spark plugs and the spark plug wires--if a wire has come loose it could cause the ATV to not start or to run poorly.

    Engine Will Not Idle

    • If the engine runs but shuts down at idle it is important to check the carburetor and adjust it as needed. The owner's manual you received when you bought your ATV should provide the proper carburetor settings for your model. It is also important to check the choke for proper adjustment--a misadjusted choke could cause the engine to run poorly or even shut down at idle.

    Cannot Rev Engine

    • If the engine runs but will not rev up, it is important to first check the throttle cable. If the throttle cable is corroded, you may be able to clean it and get it working again; otherwise the cable will need to be replaced. Also check the air intake and the air filter. If the air filter is blocked or dirty, the engine will not rev properly. It is a good idea to check the air filter on a regular basis, especially if you operate your ATV on dusty or muddy trails. Air filters on ATVs may need to be replaced more often when those ATVs are operated under harsh or dusty conditions.
