    Flame Painting

    • Place large dots of red, orange and yellow paint on a pieces of paper. Add a few small drops of black paint. Ball up a piece of plastic wrap. Use it to squish the paint around in swirls and flame shapes. Pull the plastic wrap to a point at the top of the paper to create the points on the flames. After the painted flames are dry, have the kids write tips on how to avoid a fire, using the flames as the background.

    Fire Truck Replica

    • Create replicas of fire trucks using shoe boxes. Cover the box in red construction paper, or paint it red. Circles cut from construction paper or milk jug lids painted black work well as the wheels. Use straws to create a ladder and string to make a hose. Use small people toys to serve as the firefighters. The kids can use the fire truck replicas during play time.

Another fire truck option is to create a two dimensional picture using shapes. Cut out red rectangles and squares for the main part of the fire truck. Use black circles for the wheels. Use two long, thin rectangles along with short rectangles to build a ladder. Add a string hose to the fire truck. Show the kids how to arrange the shapes to create the fire truck, or let them discover the correct arrangement.

    Fire Safety Poster

    • Provide each student a large sheet of construction paper or poster board to create fire safety posters. Encourage the kids to draw pictures and write words on the posters to illustrate important fire safety topics. Ideas include crawling beneath the smoke, stop-drop-roll, practicing an escape route or never playing with matches. Encourage them to make the posters informational and visually attractive. Share the posters with the class and hang them in the hallway for other students to see.
