How Long to Grow a Rose?

104 1

    Rose Varieties

    • Types of roses include hybrid tea roses, shrub roses, climbing roses, old-fashioned wild roses and miniature roses. While all of these varieties grow rather quickly, some have a longer growth time than others. Climbing roses may not bloom until the second year after they have been planted. All other varieties normally bloom within six to eight weeks after being planted.

    Roots, Cuttings or Seeds

    • The way in which a rose is planted also can determine the length of time until it blooms. Roses planted at the roots may bloom more quickly than cuttings that have been planted. However, old-fashioned wild roses are known for blooming just as quickly from cuttings as from planting at the root. If cared for properly, blooms can be expected within six to eight weeks. Some roses also can be grown successfully from planting the seeds. This may take up to two growing seasons to have a plant large enough to set out. The waiting period may be decreased if the seeds are kept in a refrigerated airtight container for four to five months before planting.

    Soil Conditions

    • The condition of the soil is also a factor in how quickly the rose will grow and bloom. Roses prefer at least six hours of sunlight each day. They should be watered regularly during the first few weeks of planting. The soil should be well-drained with a pH level between 5.5 and 7.0. Adding lime or manure to the soil when planting roses provides nourishment to the roots and helps boost the plants growth. Fertilize the roses three months after they have been planted. Applying mulch around the base of the plant controls weeds, moisture and temperature.

    Other Considerations

    • Regardless of which type of rose you plant, there are things to consider to enhance the growth time. Rose cuttings need to be at least six to eight inches long and cut at a 45-degree angle. When planting from the roots, allow plenty of room for the roots to spread. Water roses thoroughly and apply liquid fertilizer when planting. Spray with pesticide as needed.
