How to Change the Rear Brake Line on a Ford Truck
- 1). Position your jack under the center of the rear differential and raise the truck off the ground high enough to allow you to work comfortably under it. Place a set of jack stands under the frame to support the truck and remove the jack.
- 2). Locate the line that you need to replace. Both steel lines run across the rear end housing and attach to the wheel cylinder on the outer edge and the transfer block on the inner end of the line.
- 3). Locate the fitting that threads into the block on the axle and remove it with a wrench. It is a good idea to place a drip pan under the block to catch any brake fluid that may leak out of the line when separated.
- 4). Follow the line to the other end where it connects to the wheel cylinder. Remove the line by unscrewing the fitting with a wrench, then remove the line from under the truck. Save the line to use as a template for bending the new line.
- 5). Bend the new line with a tubing bender to match the line you just pulled out of the truck. Getting it close is fine, it does not have to be perfect. You can rent or buy a tubing bender at an auto parts store if you don't have one.
- 6). Position the new line on the axle housing and inset the fitting into the block on the axle. Tighten the fitting with a wrench. Insert the other end of the line with the fitting into the wheel cylinder, then tighten it with a wrench.
- 7). Bleed the entire brake system after replacing the line. Support the truck with the jack and remove the jack stands from under the frame. Lower the truck to the ground and top off the master cylinder with brake fluid.
