Panic attack usually happens as a result of an extremely heightened anxiety.
That is why it is sometimes referred to as anxiety attack.
When this attack occurs, a person would feel an intense feeling of apprehension or fear and can last from 10 minutes up to 30 minutes.
However, it can also be as short as 15 seconds.
It actually depends on the person's reaction to the situation.
Anxiety attack usually happens in early adulthood, although it can also appear at any age.
It usually occurs in women and to people who have average intelligence.
The symptoms of this attack include shortness of breath, trembling, chest pain, heart palpitations, cold and hot flashes, sweating, dizziness, burning sensations, hyperventilation, light-headedness, sensations of choking, tingling sensations and derealization.
However, the most common symptoms are chest pain and shortness of breath.
There are various causes of panic attacks and some of them are as follows: 1.
Alcohol, drug and/or medication withdrawal - anxiety attack can be caused by a person's withdrawal syndrome or sometimes called as rebound effect of such withdrawal.
The most common cause of withdrawal is the alcohol and benzodiazepine due to its tranquillizing properties.
2.
Phobias - a person who has a phobia often experiences the attack due to its exposure of the phobic situation or the object of which the person is most afraid of.
3.
Medications - there are some medications that have the adverse effect which can trigger an attack.
These medications do include ritalin and those antibiotics that have fluoroquinolone.
However, a person must not be worried about this as the panic attack caused by these medications is just temporary and just happens on the start of the medication.
When the person is accustomed to the drug already, most likely, the disorder disappears.
Another medication which can cause anxiety is the SSRI class of antidepressants but this only occurs at the beginning of the medication and will disappear in time.
4.
Situational bound panic attacks - being in the same kind of situation wherein a person has had a panic attack before can also trigger another attack to happen.
This is because it can create a behavioral or cognitive predisposition.
Examples of these situations are deployment, college and/or work.
5.
Biological causes - a person who has obsessive compulsive disorder, hypoglycemia, hyperthyroidism, post traumatic disorder, mitral valve polaps, pheochromocytoma, inner ear disturbances, Wilson's disease, periodic depletion of Vitamin B due to tapeworm infection or Vitamin deficiency can most likely suffer from this kind of attack.
These are just some of the causes and there are still a lot more.
Some doctors claim that it is hereditary wherein the attack has already been found to run in the family.
However, there are some people also whose families do not have any history of this kind of attack but still can still develop the disorder.
Also other doctors have stressed out that other causes of panic attacks are due to the environment where the person resides.
A person who has an overly cautious view of the world and has a stressful place can most likely experience panic attack also.
