How to Replace a 1999 Honda Civic Alternator
- 1). Determine which alternator your Honda Civic needs before ordering and purchasing a new one. Depending on the exact engine configuration of your 1999 Honda Civic, you will require a different type of alternator. Check with your local Honda dealership for more information or look it up in your owner's manual. Take the old alternator in to an automotive shop for additional clarification in purchasing the correct replacement.
- 2). Park the Civic on a flat area and set the parking brake before opening the hood. Use the pliers to disconnect the negative battery lead and look for the serpentine belt diagram chart on the hood or the radiator shroud. Reference this chart to find the exact location of the alternator, as well as the location of the tensioner pulley you need to release prior to removing the belt from the alternator.
- 3). Attach an appropriate socket and the ratchet to the bolt on the tensioner pulley. Apply pressure as indicated on the diagram chart to loosen the tensioner and remove the belt from the pulley. Take the now-slackened belt and remove it from the alternator. Leave the belt on the other pulleys in the engine.
- 4). Disconnect all wiring to the alternator. Loosen the alternator mounting bracket bolts and remove the alternator. Place the new alternator in position and reattach the bracket and tighten the bolts until it is firmly in place. Reattach all wires to the alternator. Slide the belt over the alternator pulley and adjust the tensioner pulley once again to replace the serpentine belt. Release the tensioner pulley slowly until the belt is tight.
- 5). Replace the battery leads with a pair of pliers and close the hood of the Civic. Start the engine and let the vehicle run for a few minutes while you check the various electrical processes of the car to ensure the new alternator is installed and working properly.
