A lounge room is one of the most used rooms in a home, which necessitates getting the style just right. Ultimately what is right for one person is not right for another; your perfect room depends on many factors, including your lifestyle, personal taste and the main function of the room. Start with the lounge room walls, building the design from there and paying careful attention to color choice. - For a casual, comfortable lounge room style, go for earth tones on your walls. Muted, soft shades of brown, orange, green, gold and red for your paint or wallpaper create a welcoming atmosphere. If your lounge room is primarily used for relaxing or informal family activities such as watching television, earth tones will give you the right environment. By layering your earth tones -- using different shades of the same color throughout the room on the soft furnishings, curtains and rugs as well as the walls -- you will achieve a unified decor style.
- To create a modern style of lounge room, or to make a bold statement, look at bright, solid colors for your walls, such as red, blue or green. Other contemporary tones are black, white, gray and metallics, such as gold, silver and bronze. These colors are ideal for a formal lounge room that is used for entertaining and where making an impression is a priority. Dark colors will make the room appear smaller, so unless your lounge room is large, keep the use of black to a minimum. Wallpaper is a favorite choice for a modern lounge room; for a trendy monochromatic look choose a black and white design, and add accents of bright color elsewhere in the room, such as the curtains and rugs.
- To achieve a Victorian style lounge room, pale green, pale blue, soft gold and red will create a traditional effect. These colors complement antique furniture and make the space seem bigger, which is particularly beneficial if there is a lot of dark wood in the room. To prevent your traditional tones looking too dull, incorporate an accent wall into the room; use the wall directly opposite the door into the room or the wall that has the fireplace or another focal point on it. Painting your accent wall a deeper shade of the same color used on the other walls will create additional interest in your lounge room. Another option is to use wallpaper on the accent wall and a complementary paint color on the other walls.
