How Do I Replace Disc Brake Pads on a 1994 Saab 900Se Turbo?
- 1). Park the Saab on a level stretch of road and turn the engine off. Pull the hood release lever located under the dashboard on the driver side and move to the front of the vehicle.
- 2). Lift the hood and remove the master cylinder cap. The cap is located to the right of the Saab's engine, near the back of the engine compartment. Remove half of the brake fluid inside the master cylinder with a turkey baster or syringe. Place the master cylinder cap loosely on top of the master cylinder container.
- 3). Loosen the lug nuts on all of the wheels corresponding with the brake pads you intend to replace using the tire iron from the wheel maintenance kit. Place the jack under the frame of the vehicle and lift the tires off the ground. Support the axles with jack stands for safety.
- 4). Remove the lug nuts and take the wheels off. Remove the spring clips from the outside of the brake caliper with pliers. Place a flat screwdriver inside the window on the outer edge of the caliper and force the caliper piston into the side of the caliper.
- 5). Remove the two rubber coverings over the caliper slide bolts. Remove both bolts with a 7 mm Allen wrench. Lift the caliper away from the brake pads and rotors and rest it on top of the steering arm above the brake assembly.
- 6). Pry the brake pads away from their slots inside the caliper bracket. Inspect the caliper bracket and rotor for damage and replace one or both of the components if they are damaged or significantly worn. Apply copper-based brake grease to the back sides of the new brake pads. Slide the new pads into the caliper bracket slots.
- 7). Place the caliper over the new brake pads and screw in the caliper slide bolts. Tighten both caliper bolts with a 7 mm Allen wrench. Replace the spring clip into the caliper.
- 8). Repeat this process for each additional set of brake pads that you need to replace.
- 9). Return the wheel onto the wheel bolts and screw on the lug nuts by hand. Lift the Saab with the jack and remove the jack stands. Lower the vehicle's tires to the ground and tighten the lug nuts with the tire iron.
