How to Replace a Belt on a Craftsman Lathe
- 1). Remove all the lathe covers in order according to the manufacturer's guide.
- 2). Remove the power source from the lathe by unplugging the lathe or throwing the breaker or use the lock out device for the activator switch if present. Newer Craftsman tools have a lock out device or anti-accidental activation switch system installed.
- 3). Tighten the drive belt until the belt is visible.
- 4). Remove the two bolts that hold the swing arm in place and unscrew it from the adjustment nut.
- 5). Remove the four bolts that hold the bearing assembly to the lathe's drive shaft. The drive shaft will now hang by the speed belt allowing you to more easily access the drive belt and remove it from the cogged wheels.
- 6). Look the belt over completely and note any areas where the cog nubs might be pitted or torn.
- 7). Inspect the cogged wheels closely to make sure there is no debris left over from the previous belt.
- 1). Hold the drive assembly and the lower wheel out of the way and drape the new drive belt over the cogged drive wheel.
- 2). Stretch the belt into place using a blunt tool and your fingers.
- 3). Place the drive bearing assembly back where it goes and bolt it back down tightly.
- 4). Reattach the speed adjustment arm and bolt it into place tightly.
- 5). Reattach the speed adjustment wheel and use the wheel to adjust the lower pulleys as close together as they will go. This will set the default low speed for the lathe.
- 6). Tighten the belt on the drive assembly.
- 7). Replace the lathe covers in the reverse order that you removed them.
- 8). Power on your lathe and set the preferred speed according to the manufacturer's recommendations.
