Installation Instructions for a Westell 6100 Modem
- 1). Plug the power cord into the back of the modem. The back of the modem will have a place clearly marked "10.5 VAC". Below that will be a round port for you to plug the AC adapter. This adapter should be provided by the manufacturer or the Internet service provider supplying the modem.
- 2). Plug the other end of the power supply into an electrical outlet. If at all possible the adapter should be plugged into a surge protector to prevent the device from being damaged by power spikes or lightning.
- 3). Plug a DSL filter into the phone wall outlet where the DSL connection resides. These filters are provided by your Internet service provider. One end will have a RJ-11 phone connection that will plug into the wall outlet. The other end will have a RJ-11 receptacle into which you can plug another RJ-11 cord.
- 4). Plug the modem into the Internet service provider's connection. You will be using a RJ-11 phone cord for this step. Plug one end into the back of the modem in the port labeled "DSL" and the other end into the phone connection at a wall outlet. The phone cord will typically be supplied by the manufacturer or the Internet provider supplying the modem.
- 5). Connect the modem to the computer. If you will be connecting by USB, connect one end of the supplied cable to the modem in the port labeled "USB" and the other end into a free USB port in your computer. If you are connecting with an Ethernet cable, connect one end of an Ethernet cable to the modem in the "Ethernet" port and the other end into the network interface card of your computer.
- 6). Turn on the modem. The power switch is located on the back of the modem. Flip the switch to the "on" position. Wait for the lights on the front of the modem labeled "Power", "DSL" and "Internet" to turn a steady green.
