By far the most popular rig for the full-time traveling couple, the Class A motorhome comes in some of the widest range of choices and options available in the whole of the RV spectrum.
Class A motorhomes can be had in lengths ranging from 22 feet to well over 40 feet.
Class A's can sport the regular motorhome look, to large, imposing wide-body motorcoaches filled with every conceivable luxury.
Indeed, the Class A motorhomes in the higher price ranges are some of the most luxurious recreational vehicles on the road today.
Interiors can range from the lower end, "standard" RV look, to the extreme high end with plush leather seating, crystal chandeliers, mirrored ceilings, wood flooring and other high end appointments.
Multiple slide-outs can be found with some models sporting up to four.
Some coaches feature full length, full wall slides greatly expanding the interior space.
In the Class A motorhome arena, one can purchase any desired level of luxury provided they can afford it! Most models except the smaller models under 25 feet, come with most of the features one would expect from a standard motorhome.
The front usually features swivel seats that add to the usable interior living space.
The kitchen and entertainment area is usually mid-ship, and can sport a number of couches, dinettes, computer desks and so on.
Sometimes the area above the front seats will house a large entertainment system and extra storage.
The rear of the coach will feature a bedroom most often, with a bathroom in the hallway, or in the larger models taking up the entire rear of the motorhome.
Pros:
  • The coach is always accessible from the front seats allowing one to simply pull over to use the facilities, such as using the bathroom, grabbing a snack, or taking a nap on the side of the road or in a parking lot.
  • Large expansive windshields in the front add to the enjoyment of the passing scenery, and facilitate picture taking from the front coach seats.
  • Once one is used to the extra length, these rigs are fairly easy to drive and operate.
  • For the traveling couple, Class A's take no more setup than leveling the coach, often automatically, popping the slides, and turning on the propane and connecting the electrical and water lines if available.
If there are other travelers one may need to make up the sofa or the dinette into an additional bed.
Cons:
  • Large Class A's will need to tow an auxiliary vehicle for getting around and doing errands, adding to the complexity of the setup, as breaking down a Class A to go to the store can be very inconvenient.
  • The large sizes of most Class A's dictate that you will have trouble navigating windy mountain roads or narrow city streets.
One will have to seek out rest areas, parking lots at malls and supermarkets, when looking to stop while traveling, as it can be hard to park on most streets.
Parking garages, overpasses and tunnels may present a problem to the large length and wide body designs.
  • Gas mileage can be very low, leading to a high cost of operation when underway, often under 10 miles per gallon.
  • Rustic campgrounds and primitive areas may be inaccessible to these big rigs.
It isn't that they shun large motorhomes; it's just that they were designed when large RV's weren't around.
Cost: Class A motorhomes are priced from around $60,000 in the low end models to between $1-200,000 in the more common motorhome lines available.
Those with deep pockets and want the very best available, can spend well over $1,000,000 or more to purchase a totally unique and custom built coach.
Class A motorhomes have an appeal to those who are full-timing and consider their rig "home".
They are ideal for the traveling couple whether they are retired or happen to be professionals living and working on the road.
The large luxury models are also the rig of choice for entertainers and others who can afford to purchase these castles on wheels.
Available in every price range and conceivable floor plan, there is sure to be a Class A motorhome that's right for you.
