    • 1). Check the air around your Motorola DCH6416. If you see smoke or pick up a burning scent, then the DVR is overheating. Unplug the unit immediately and contact your cable provider or Motorola for assistance.

    • 2). Touch the surface of the DVR and the entire length of the power cord including where the cord plugs into an electrical socket. In addition, check nearby surfaces, stand top or cabinet walls. If any surface feels hot, the unit is likely overheating. Unplug it and have it inspected.

    • 3). Listen to your DVR. If you don’t hear any type of humming when you’re using it, the fan has likely malfunctioned and the DVR is overheating or about to do so. If you hear the fan constantly, then the fan is likely overcompensating because the system is overheating. In either situation, unplug the unit and get it repaired or replaced.

    • 4). Check the location of the box. If you have the box next to any type of heat source such as a portable heater, heat vents, radiator, stove or any item that generates significant heat, the box is likely overheating. Move it to a cooler location and then repeat steps 1, 2 and 3 to determine if it is still overheating.

    • 5). Make a note of every time you reboot the system or it automatically shuts off and then review your list. If you find you’re rebooting your DVR every day or multiple time every day, or the DVR is turning itself off frequently, it can have several issues including an overheating problem.
