How to Repair the Rear Brakes on a 2003 Tahoe Vehicle
- 1). Park your Tahoe on a flat surface and set the parking brake.
- 2). Open the hood and prop it up with the hood support rod. Open the cap on the master cylinder reservoir -- it is a semi-opaque, white, plastic container with a black cap, located on the right side of the car, on top of the engine.
- 3). Suction out approximately two-thirds of the brake fluid from the master cylinder reservoir using a turkey baster or syringe.
- 4). Loosen, but do not remove, the lug bolts on the rear wheels of the Tahoe using a tire iron or a four-way.
- 5). Raise the Tahoe with a floor jack and place a pair of jack stands underneath the frame, one on each side. Lower the vehicle onto the jack stands and pull the jack out of the way.
- 6). Remove the loosened lug nuts on both rear wheels and pull them off the Tahoe.
- 7). Remove the caliper pin with a wrench or a ratchet and socket. The pin is near the top of the caliper and resembles a bolt.
- 8). Remove the caliper from the rotor, but don't allow it to hang from the brake line, as this will damage the caliper. Suspend it from the vehicle frame with a piece of wire.
- 9). Pull out the inboard and outboard linings. These parts are black plastic and can be removed by hand.
- 10
Pry out the old brake pads using a flat-head screwdriver. - 11
Position the heads of a C-clamp above and below the caliper piston and tighten it until the piston is compressed to the back of the caliper. - 12
Install the new brake pads. Firmly press each pad into place where the old one was. - 13
Put the caliper back on the rotor and replace the pins. - 14
Repeat the process on the other wheel. - 15
Put the wheels back on and tighten the lug nuts. Raise the Tahoe slightly with the jack and remove the jack stands. Lower the vehicle to the ground and remove the jack. Retighten the lug nuts on both rear tires. - 16
Refill the master cylinder reservoir with brake fluid, topping off the fluid level to the "Fill" line. - 17
Pump the brake pedal all the way to the floor repeatedly at least 15 times. Then, then top off the master cylinder reservoir with brake fluid once more. - 18
Reseal the cap on the master cylinder reservoir by hand-tightening in a clockwise direction and close the hood.
