Bathroom Lighting Considerations
- The bathroom in particular is a room where water and electricity operate within close proximity to each other. In most municipalities, light fixtures within 6 feet of the shower, tub or sink must be either "wet" or "shower-location" rated.
- The placement of lighting for the vanity should be given importance, to avoid shadows beneath the eyes, around the chin and under the cheeks, so that the face will be correctly illuminated for daily grooming. Lights should be properly mounted on either side of the vanity mirror or across the surface of a large mirror. Crisp white light bulbs show skin tones with the best accuracy. The shower and toilet are two other areas that should have adequate lighting.
- As the bathroom is often a haven to relax and unwind, the proper lighting can set the room's overall mood and complement its decor. Dimmers, besides being a way to conserve energy, are one tool to set the mood over specific fixtures or the overall room.
