Quantum Man (smaller version)
One of physicist-turned-sculptor Julian Voss-Andreae's most intriguing pieces is the Quantum Man, a piece which plays upon the idea that in our current understanding of matter, objects are made up of more empty space than actual physical substance. In fact, the physical substance that we do know about is actually made up of waves of energy, as outlined by the principle of wave particle duality. The full effect of this can be seen by comparing this view with the side view, the following one in this gallery.
The piece uses vertical plates, which represent a horizontal motion of the particle waves. In preparation of a related piece, Quantum Woman, Voss-Andreae uses horizontal plates for vertical motion, representing women's energies being placed between earth and the heavens. The Quantum Man, on the other hand, places his energy into the earthly realm.
