HOPE, Where Does It Begin and End?

103 20
Hope begins with YOU and ME.
ADD these two words and they become WE.
Hope ends with US and THEM.
USE those two words and they are the END.
Ok, so I want you to think about the word WE and what it means to you? Here is what it means to me.
WE means strength and confidence and the ability to accomplish anything WE set our minds to.
It means focus, doing the best that I can do, being the best that I can be.
It means being a part of a team: collective thinking and shared thoughts.
It means calm, secure and safe.
These are just a few of the thoughts, the words that come to my mind when I think about the word WE.
That is not to say it is not healthy to spend time alone to do things on your own.
Of course it is as we need balance in life and we need time to reflect upon our time spent with others.
Because it is through relationships with others, the WE, that we learn the most about ourselves.
There are times that it can be fun to go to a movie alone or a walk in the park or even have lunch by yourself.
But, I bet that if I asked you to recall your most enjoyable moments, it would be with someone.
That is because WE have fun together, WE can talk and share and laugh, WE can create a space for one another that is safe and secure.
We can share ideas and create HOPE for others.
However, when we speak in terms of us and them it negates the WE and there is division and paralysis.
Us and them can insinuate right and wrong or one having proper information and the other not.
Ultimately us and them will lead to opposition and little or no hope.
Why is it that whenever there is a catastrophe in the world such as a tsunami, a hurricane or a 9/11 suddenly people realize that WE are all ONE and the word HOPE becomes the most popular word of the day? Then when the memory fades and the crisis has passed the language becomes US and THEM and the HOPE dissipates or disappears.
Why does it take such an event for people to realize that HOPE comes from YOU and ME and that whenever we use the language US and THEM all hope is gone? Language and words are so important.
I am sure that you can remember the saying most of us heard as children, "sticks and stones will break my bones but names will never hurt me.
" Well, that was wrong.
Names do hurt, words do hurt, sayings do hurt.
Not only do they hurt, but they divide and separate us from them so that there is no room for WE.
So, the next time that you are thinking about us and them, stop, breathe and take time to realize that you have a choice and that WE are much more alike than WE are different.
And that together, WE can make the world a better place filled with HOPE!
