Have you used the Parental Controls feature in Windows 7 operating system? If you have children at home and do not want them to open certain programs in your absence, this feature is absolutely necessary. The feature also acts as a tool through which parents can control the duration of time their children will spend on the computer system and the programs the children will be using. For this the parents have to know the use of the Parental controls feature or contact a remote PC repair service for help.

Ways in which access is limited

There are actually 3 ways for limiting the access. Take a look at the ways.

Program restrictions limit the user to use just the specified programs. If the parents have not specified some programs, the children will not be able to use them.

Time restrictions are for limiting the children to log on only during the specified time period. In this case, if a user logs in and the time goes outside the time period that has been specified, the user will be logged off automatically. If parents want they can specify the time between 6 pm and 8 pm for log in; this implies that children cannot use the computer system at any other time apart from this time period.

There are also game restrictions, where parents can have specified games for the children to play; they cannot play any other games apart from the specified ones.

Setting the Parental Controls feature

Parents first have to click on the Start menu and then access the Control Panel. The next step will be to click on the subcategory labeled Set up parental controls for any user; this is found under the User Accounts and Family Safety category. In the Parental Controls window, the user has to click on the users picture and choose a user. Now in the User Controls window, the user must click on On, enforce current settings. This way, several options can be set up for that user.

For setting program restrictions, parents must click on Allow and block specific programs. In the new window that opens up, parents must click the User can use only programs I allow option. Now check the programs you want to allow and click Ok for saving the settings.

For setting time restrictions, the parents have to click on Time Limits. In the new window that opens, the user must click on an hour block in a week. The blue blocks are blocked and the white ones are allowed. Make changes according to your preferences and then click OK for saving the settings.

For setting game restrictions, parents must click on Games. The new window that opens allows the user to play or not play games. The user may also specify the type of content that is to be allowed in games.
