Burndy Mechanical Lug Torque Specs

    History

    • Burndy began its company in 1924. The company specializes in engineering and manufacturing electrical connectors and wiring accessories. It also offer connections, or lugs, that hold electrical wiring in place.

    Specifications

    • A mechanical lug connection must have a specific applied torque. Torque specifications depend upon the material of the bolt being applied to the lug, as well as the size of the bolt. For example, a 0.75 inch steel bolt requires 1,050 inch-pounds of torque. But, for a 0.75 inch aluminum bolt, the torque requirement is much lower, at 650 inch-pounds.

    Lug Torque Considerations

    • The connection between the electrical wire and the bolt/lug securing point must use compatible materials, such as aluminum matched with aluminum alloy. The matched materials will then have less of a tendency to corrode or react with one another.
