How to Set Up a Refrigerator
- 1). Choose the correct location for your refrigerator. The ideal site is out of direct sunlight and away from heat sources with a temperature between 55 and 110 Fahrenheit. Choose somewhere with an even, solid floor with enough available space for an inch of air circulation room on all sides. The location you choose should also be close to cold water valves and a power outlet. You should not use an extension cord to plug in your refrigerator.
- 2). Hook up the water supply according to the instructions supplied with your refrigerator, if necessary. Access to cold water is essential if you want to use the ice maker function or the water dispenser. The exact instructions vary by model and manufacturer.
- 3). Install the shelves and crisper drawers to your liking. Most refrigerator models let you slide shelves into positions that suit your needs. Slide the crisper drawers in place at the bottom of the fridge and clip any door shelving onto the mounts. Attach the door, if necessary. Screw any door handles onto the outside of the door and shut the refrigerator.
- 4). Plug the refrigerator into a working electrical outlet; the motor starts to run and the temperature starts to drop inside the refrigerator and freezer compartments. Most modern refrigerators are pre-set to the ideal food storage temperatures of 37 F in the fridge compartment and 0 F in the freezer. Adjust the temperature now if the settings are too high. Consider purchasing a refrigerator thermometer to help you set the temperature if your model features a dial thermostat.
- 5). Wait 24 hours for compartments to reach their desired temperature before you start to add food. The first ice cubes will start to drop into the bucket around this time. A full harvest of ice cubes usually takes around 72 hours. The water in the fountain should also be chilled within 24 hours.
