How to Change the Strings on an Epiphone Acoustic Guitar

    • 1). Remove any old or broken strings from the guitar. Detune and unwind them from the tuning machine posts. Use a string-winding tool or a pair of pliers to pull the pins from the bridge and free the ball-end of the strings. When using standard pliers, it is a good idea to put a piece of soft cloth between the pin and pliers to avoid damaging the pins or your guitar's finish.

Insert the ball end of the low E string into the corresponding hole in the bridge and press the bridge pin down into the hole. As you press the pin down, pull up on the string, wedging the ball end against the bridge and holding the string securely in place. Repeat this step for each string.

    • 3). Pull the high E and low E strings up to the headstock so that they are straight and aligned as they would be if the guitar were strung. Use wire cutters or a string cutting tool to clip each string as it crosses the tuning posts for the B and A strings. Repeat this process for the rest of the strings, trimming them so that they are about one post length longer than the post they will be strung to.

Insert the end of the low E string into the tuning post from the inside of the headstock. Wind the tuner counterclockwise with a winding tool, guiding each wrap of the string under the previous one. If you do not have a winding tool you can wind by hand, though this will take much longer. Bring the string up to tension, but don't worry about its exact tuning yet. Repeat this step until all strings are wound.

    • 5). Use a tuner to bring each string up to proper pitch.
