How to Select Oars

    • 1). Measure the span of your boat from oar lock to oar lock. Divide the measurement in half and then add 2 inches to determine the length of the oar from the end grip to the oar lock fitting.

    • 2). Calculate the length of the oar. Sit in a chair and measure from your chair to your nose. Add this number to the height of your rowboat seat and add the length of the paddle blade.

    • 3). Select oars that match the measurements from step 1 and step 2.

    • 4). Select a tapered grip for longer oars and a barrel grip for oars under 7 feet.

    • 5). Decide on an oar blade shape. Flat blades are used as all-purpose oars. Spoon blades are suited for more pulling power and speed. If your boat is larger, you may want to try a wide spoon blade.
