Deer Blinds Made Simple

    Ground Blinds

    • Ground blinds are solid and safe. Many are built out of nothing more than fabric, and erected with small, flexible poles. Some, however, are attached to larger frames for greater stability. While larger models are more comfortable and provide more shelter in inclement weather, they can be bulky and more difficult to conceal. Both the smaller and larger models place the hunter at the same height as the deer, which can be a drawback if the deer is able to detect your scent. However, ground blinds remain popular because of their accessibility and ability to put you in the thick of things.

    Tree Blinds

    • Tree blinds are built into trees to give hunters long-range shots and to help them avoid detection by scent and sight. However, any tree blind location should be carefully scouted before the season. Because of the time invested in building a blind, its position will forecast your degree of success. Ridge lines littered with acorns and natural landscape bottlenecks that channel deer into lowland areas are good places for tree blinds. However, because tree blinds are elevated, they can pose a safety threat. Remember to climb carefully and lift your weapon by a rope once you're in the blind. Also, remember to tie yourself into the blind when you begin hunting, to make it safer in case you fall asleep during the hunt.

    Natural Blinds

    • Natural blinds are made from materials you find in the woods. These blinds are excellent because they don't disturb the visual appearance of the area very much. With a good hunting knife, you can cut small branches and brush and place them on the ground. You also can assemble a small wall of dead fall wood to raise your blind's barrier. However, natural blinds also can wither quickly. Make sure your blind blends in with the immediate surroundings. If it is too large or the foliage is in stark contrast to the surroundings, it can call undue attention to your hunting spot.
