How to Change a Wooden Outdoor Deck Into a Porcelain Tiled Deck
- 1). Measure and cut a strip of flexible external tile underlayment to fit the area you want to tile. Spread thinset mortar under it with a notched mortar trowel. Press the strip into place.
- 2). Measure, cut and install additional pieces of underlayment, pressing the edges together and completely covering the area. Let the mortar dry overnight.
- 3). Snap two intersecting lines over the underlayment with your chalkbox, to divide it into four squares.
- 4). Cover a few feet of the underlayment with thinset mortar, using the same trowel as before. Stay within one of the corners formed by the intersecting lines.
- 5). Set a porcelain tile in place at the corner of the lines. Put more tiles around it, with spacers between them. Build out from the center to the edges, spreading mortar as needed. Cut your tiles if necessary at the edges on a tile cutter to fit the area. Let them set overnight.
- 6). Take out the tile spacers. Use a grout float to spread grout into the spaces. Wipe up the residual grout with a sponge. Let it set for a full day.
