How to Make a Diaper & Wipe Case
- 1). Pre-wash and dry the fat quarters on a warm or hot wash cycle to pre-shrink the fabric before starting the project. You may want to wash them in a lingerie bag to prevent too much fraying. Trim off any loose threads after drying.
- 2). Press each fat quarter of fabric with a hot iron to remove wrinkles.
- 3). Measure and cut a 10-by-7.5 inch piece (for the front and flap portion) and a 15-by-7.5 inch piece (for the back portion) from each fat quarter. You now have four pieces of fabric: two for the outer shell and two for the lining.
- 4). Place the larger pieces on your cutting mat, orienting them so the short edge is horizontal and the long edge is vertical. Measure up each long edge and make a mark at 10 inches. Next, go to the short edge closest to where you made your marks then measure and make a mark two inches from each corner. Use your ruler to match up the two marks on each side then cut with the rotary cutter. You have just created your flap.
- 5). Place the front and back pieces of the outer shell together, lining them the edges with the flap hanging out at the top. Stitch the pieces together using a 1/2-inch seam allowance then clip the curves. Repeat this step for the lining fabric.
- 6). Turn the lining fabric right side out then tuck it inside the outer shell (don't turn the outer shell right side out yet). The right sides of your fabrics will be facing each other. Pin the raw edges of the lining to the raw edges of the outer shell. Stitch the raw edges together using a 1/2-inch seam allowance, making sure to leave a small opening for turning your fabric. Clip the curves.
- 7). Turn the diaper and wipe case right side out by pushing the outer shell fabric through the opening.
- 8). Pin the hole closed then top stitch around the flap and pouch opening to close up the hole and give the pouch a finished look.
- 9). Stitch your hook and loop tape to the flap and opening, making sure to test it out before sewing to ensure perfect placement.
