How to Install a Rear Main Seal
- 1). If installing a two-piece synthetic rubber rear main oil seal, press it into place around the rear of the crankshaft and into the block and the rear main cap. Spread a little bit of oil on the lip of the seal before installing it. Be sure to point the sealing lip toward the inside of the engine, or oil will pour out past the seal when the engine starts.
- 2). If installing a two-piece rope seal (also known as a "wick" seal), carefully work the seal into place into the rear main cap and the block using a special seal installation tool and light taps with a hammer. If you don't have the special tool, hand pressure on a smooth steel bar should suffice. A single-edge razor blade should be used to cut the seal flush with the line demarcating the main cap and the block.
- 3). to install a one-piece synthetic rubber rear main oil seal, press it into the block and rear main cap only after the cap has been bolted to the block. From the rear of the engine, use a seal driver to push the seal into position. After installation, check to make sure the seal is not damaged.
- 4). Often, silicone sealer is recommended to be put on the rear main cap to prevent leakage between the mating surfaces of the block and the rear main seal.
