Kids learn pretty quickly about the value of money and all the things that it can buy. Youth salesmanship activities should gain their interest immediately as most kids will view it as a way to find empowerment outside of the family structure and earn their own money. Since most kids have limited means, they will most likely need adult guidance in the goods and services that someone their age can sell.

    Services

    • Kids 10 years old and upwards can provide a great deal of valuable services to adults and other families around their neighborhood. For example, they can wash cars, mow lawns, repair bicycle tires, clean windows, remove leaves, shovel snow and groom pets. The key to selling these services to others is helping youths make their presence known. Kids can make up fliers and place them in mailboxes of people that they know around the neighborhood. Make sure that the contact number or email address is of a responsible adult so that you can screen the calls or requests. Kids will quickly learn the importance of hard work and high quality when it comes to selling and providing a service.

    Artistry

    • For artistic children starting their own business selling things that they create will no doubt be exciting and rewarding. Explain to them that they need to do more than just sell drawings that they made on construction paper. Instead, encourage them to create things that are not only artistic, but they also have a function. For example, they could wash, paint and polish rocks and sell them as paperweights or they could make original pieces of jewelry using found items around the house. Alternatively, you could let your child go through your attic and paint items that you no longer use, such as old lamps or furniture and sell those. In this case you should teach them about budgeting their money for supplies and then appropriately pricing their items so that they make a profit. Kids also need to learn that they have to advertise these sidewalk sales by posting notices throughout the neighborhood.

    Edibles

    • In certain respects, selling food and drinks are sometimes the easiest things that children can sell, if their timing is right. Furthermore, if children are selling lemonade or baking cookies or brownies to sell, they're also fine-tuning their culinary skills. Explain to them the importance of strategy. For example, warm, gooey chocolate chip cookies might not be the best thing to sell on a hot, humid day, whereas ice-cold lemonade might be the perfect thing. You could try to accompany the young entrepreneurs to places where they might be more likely to sell their products; for example, you could escort a child to a public park where they can set up their lemonade stand or outside of an old folks' home. Again, you'll need to explain to children about the importance of budgeting their money for supplies and then appropriately pricing their items to make a profit.
