The Advantages of Larger Tires on Cars

    • One of the simplest ways to customize a car is to put larger wheels and tires on it. This can help many cars to look sportier and more upscale. While there are downsides to larger diameter tires, there are also many advantages to putting larger tires on a car other than improving a car's appearance.

    Improved Acceleration

    • Torque is the amount of force exerted to turn the wheel. The more torque an engine produces, the harder the axle will turn the wheel. In car with an engine that supplies a lot of initial torque, a larger tire will allow for more surface area to grip the road and push. This will help a higher-torque engine to accelerate more quickly.

    Increased Cruising Mileage

    • The smaller the wheel diameter, the more force it takes to make it move the same distance when compared to a larger one. One rotation of a larger tire takes you farther than one rotation of a smaller one. This allows for better fuel economy per revolution while cruising.

    Better Handling

    • Larger tires permit a larger area of connection between the tire and the road, improving traction or grip to the road. Better traction prevents slipping and allows for better control of the car's response. This equals better and more consistent handling.

    Better Braking

    • Even though brake calipers and rotors do the actual stopping of the car's forward motion, the tires are a part of the braking process as well, because they are the only part of the car that touches the road. More tire-to-road contact allows for a quicker and shorter stop.

    Enhanced Safety

    • The best way to safely survive a car accident is to never get in one. The better braking and handling provided by larger tires increase your chances of avoiding an accident altogether by stopping before it happens or steering out of it.
