Decorative Canopies for Beds
- Hang a decorative curtain rod from the ceiling above both the head and foot of the bed. Make sure the curtain rods line up with each other. Measure the distance from the floor to the ceiling at the head of the bed, and the distance from curtain rod to curtain rod, then add those two figures together. Add another 12 inches to that measurement. Cut a length of fabric that total size. Line the back 12 inches of the bottom of the fabric in a contrasting fabric. Hang the canopy by draping it over the two curtain rods between the rods and the ceiling. The bottom of the fabric length, which is the portion with the contrasting fabric, should hang over the curtain rod above the foot of the bed.
- Hang curtain rods from the ceiling, one on each side of the bed and one in the center, so the rods extend from the head of the bed toward the foot but stop about midway. Drape gauze so it touches the floor on both sides of the bed and swags slightly between the curtain rods. Swag icicle lights across the curtain rods at the head of the bed.
- Using a wire or clamp, hang a wreath on the wall just below ceiling height centered above the head of the bed. Cut a length of sheer fabric about 2 1/2 times as long as needed to reach from the wreath to the floor beside the bed, with a little swag in the material. Gather the material at the center, and slide a rubber band over the end of the fabric and to the center point. Hook the rubber band to the wire or clamp securing the wreath to the wall, making sure the rubber band is behind the wreath. Pull the leftover material to either side of the bed, and allow it to fall gently into folds to the floor. If the material gets caught when you're sleeping, add two smaller wreaths slightly above pillow height and about 2 inches out from either side of the bed. Catch the fabric behind each wreath to secure it.
- Screw cup hooks into the ceiling above each corner of the bed. Cut sheer fabric about 6 inches longer than the measurement from floor to ceiling. Create four panels in this length. Gather one end of one panel, and secure it with a rubber band in the same manner you'd secure a ponytail with a rubber band. Slide the rubber band over the cup hook and tie a ribbon bow around the fabric and the cup hook. Allow the column to cascade to the floor. Do this at each corner until you have all four fabric columns in place, creating the canopy.
